Life on Wheels

Once we finally got home from the hospital, we quickly fell into a new routine. Kallen is handling the whole cast thing so wonderfully. She likes her wheelchair pretty well, and has not been in much pain. The itching seems to be the worst part. 

Beautiful Kinley is handling everything really well, too. It can be hard on siblings when all the attention is focused somewhere other than on them, but she never complained. She is quick to help when needed and is great at entertaining Kallen. Kinley coming home from school in the afternoon is pretty much the highlight of Kallen's day!

In case you are wondering about Kallen's surgery and hip dysplasia, here is an X-ray of her left hip before surgery. The socket is more straight than curved and is too shallow.

Here is her hip X-ray after surgery. The two pins are holding the graft in place, while the large plate is holding the femur together. You can see where they cut the femur in two to rotate it. Ouch... This hurts me to look at it :(. However, had we not opted to do the surgery now, it would have meant hip arthritis and a hip replacement sometime in her teens or twenties. Certainly not an option!

She stayed pretty still the first few days, only getting up to potty (another feat in and of itself). But, she finally got brave enough to get on the floor on her tummy. Fun! Graham was happy to have his sister playing with him, and I think Kallen was excited to have a new position to be in :)

We have a twin bed set up in our bedroom, our little infirmary haha. Kinley likes to get in bed with her and watch movies on the iPad. Bless you, iPad. What a great thing to have in this situation!

Since she was unable to go to preschool for a while, we had some school time at home. Here, we are learning about the letter 'Q' with a "Queens' Tea Party".

We have had so many sweet visitors come over and help entertain us. Kallen has been showered with gifts, treats, love... Here she is playing with a fingerprint art set from her BFF, Lacy.

Kallen loves to help me cook. She has started getting a little "down" about all the things she can't do right now, so we decided to cheer up with some muffins. Kallen did most of the work, from her seat on the couch ;)

We have our first week under our belt and our counting down the days to the cast removal. So far, things have gone as smoothly as one could hope for! Hooray! So proud of my brave girl!
